The term “libero” is Italian and means free, clear, unattached, and vacant. It aptly signifies the free will to substitute with a back-row player. Hence, a libero in volleyball is a defender who is free enough to switch positions in the back row during a game.
Known for their skills in passing, digging, and receiving serves, the libero is undoubtedly one of the most strategic and impactful positions on the court. Although this player may be allowed to serve, they cannot block or attempt to block and do not play in the front row.
In a game session, only one libero can play per set. The libero jersey color is usually different from the jersey color of the team members on the court.
This allows for easy identification and tracking by the referee because of the libero’s freedom to enter and exit the court. It is important to note that the libero in volleyball is only used in indoor games and is usually the best passer or defender in a team.
